Rafael Fleury Munoz Sentenced for Cocaine Trafficking, Providence RI, 2022
A Dominican national has been sentenced to time served for his role in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy in Providence, Rhode Island.
Rafael Fleury Munoz, 23, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He was sentenced to time served and ordered to be turned over to Immigration and Custom Enforcement to face deportation proceedings.
On March 26, 2022, Munoz attempted to retrieve a package from a postal carrier that had been mailed to an address in Providence. The package contained 1.15 kilograms of cocaine. Two days later, Munoz successfully retrieved a different parcel delivered to a Johnston residence that contained 1.07 kilograms of cocaine.
Prosecutors say Munoz acted as a member of a criminal drug conspiracy when he attempted to retrieve the packages. He was detained in federal custody since his arrest on March 28, 2022.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Denise M. Barton and Stacey A. Erickson. The matter was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Munoz’s sentencing is a significant blow to the cocaine trafficking ring, and authorities are hopeful that it will serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the cocaine trafficking ring to come forward.
