Felix Suarez Admits to Shipping Fentanyl to Australia
A hard-hitting federal investigation has led to the conviction of Felix Suarez, a 25-year-old Providence man, for his role in shipping fentanyl to Australia.
According to court documents, Suarez pleaded guilty to charges filed in a five-count federal indictment that alleged he attempted to export fentanyl from the United States to Australia multiple times.
The indictment includes conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl; two counts of attempt to distribute a controlled substance; unlawful export of a controlled substance; and unlawful use of a communication facility to facilitate the distribution of a controlled substance.
Suarez is scheduled to be sentenced on August 1, 2024, after a federal district judge considers the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The investigation began in December 2022 when U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized an outbound parcel destined for Sydney, Australia, containing approximately 37 grams of fentanyl.
Further investigation revealed that Suarez had mailed the package from a UPS store in Providence, and that he had shipped a total of 67 parcels to the same recipient in Sydney from January 2020 to January 2023.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Protection, Australian Federal Police, Australian Department of Home Affairs, Providence Police Department, Warwick Police Department, and Central Falls Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr. is prosecuting the case.
