A 39-year-old man from Mexico has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for illegally reentering the United States.

Rafael Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced on April 16, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.

The defendant had previously been removed from the United States on three occasions, with the most recent removal occurring in 2019 from the Western District of Texas.

Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was arrested in Buena Vista County on February 2, 2024, for a controlled substance violation and failure to affix a drug stamp for being in possession of distribution quantities of cocaine.

An investigation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was a citizen of Mexico and had previously been removed from the United States on three previous occasions.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kevin C. Fletcher and Jack Lammers, and investigated by the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.

According to court records, Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment and must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The defendant is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
