BRUNSWICK, GA: A Chatham County man is heading to prison after a federal jury found him guilty of illegally possessing a firearm.
Raheem DaSheen Jackson, 30, of Savannah was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, according to U.S. Attorney David H. Estes for the Southern District of Georgia.
Jackson has at least three prior felony convictions, which means he could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison if adjudicated as an Armed Career Criminal. There is no parole in the federal system.
Jackson was arrested in January 2021 after he fled a traffic stop conducted by Savannah Police officers. He was a passenger in the vehicle and dropped a loaded semiautomatic handgun as he ran. A criminal background check revealed his prior felony convictions, leading to the charge of illegally possessing the gun.
U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood will schedule Jackson for sentencing after a presentence investigation by U.S. Probation Services.
The case was investigated by the ATF and the Savannah Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marcela C. Mateo and Noah J. Abrams.
“Our office and our law enforcement partners are committed to removing violent criminals from our communities,” said U.S. Attorney Estes. “Previously convicted felons like Raheem Jackson know they are prohibited from carrying guns, and our streets are safer with them behind bars.”
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives will continue to work with federal, state, and local partners to reduce violent crime, said Beau Kolodka, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office.
