Raleigh Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Cocaine Trafficking

A Raleigh man has been sentenced to 420 months in prison for his role in a major cocaine trafficking operation. Donteze Ruffin, 30, was found guilty of conspiring to distribute and possessing with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, 280 grams or more of cocaine base, and a quantity of marijuana.

According to court documents, Ruffin was a member of a drug trafficking organization that operated in Southeast Raleigh as early as 2004. The organization was responsible for cooking multiple kilograms of cocaine into crack cocaine and distributing it to local communities.

The investigation, part of Operation Damu Demolition, also revealed that Ruffin and his co-conspirators were responsible for the bulk distribution of high-grade marijuana, with over 500 pounds seized during the investigation.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Raleigh-Durham Safe Streets Task Force, which included the Raleigh Police Department, the Cary Police Department, the Garner Police Department, the Durham Police Department, the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina Department of Probation and Parole.

Ruffin’s sentence includes 420 months in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Denise Walker.

Operation Damu Demolition was a joint effort by law enforcement agencies to take down a major cocaine trafficking operation in the Raleigh area. The operation has resulted in numerous arrests and convictions, and is a significant blow to organized crime in the region.
