Raleigh Man Sentenced to 6 Years for Illegally Possessing a Firearm and Ammunition
A Raleigh man has been sentenced to 82 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan handed down the sentence to Dominique Dashawn Watson, 27, of Raleigh, NC, for his conviction related to the July 12, 2018 traffic stop by the Raleigh Police Department. Investigators seized 16 grams of marijuana from Watson’s underwear, a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, and 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition from the vehicle.
The firearm was reported stolen in Garner, North Carolina, and Watson was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to his prior felony convictions. This case is part of Project Guardian, a federal initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Raleigh Police Department, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel William Smith represented the government.
Watson pled guilty to the charge of Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Convicted Felon on March 28, 2019. The case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
This sentencing is a significant blow to those involved in gun crimes in the Raleigh area, and a testament to the hard work of law enforcement agencies working to keep our communities safe.
