Baltimore, Maryland – Jimoh Babatunde Aderomilehin, a 24-year-old from Randallstown, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a multi-faceted fraud scheme that involved cashing counterfeit checks and operating a credit card skimming operation.
U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett also ordered Aderomilehin to pay $468,534.42 in restitution following his conviction on charges of bank fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein; Brian Murphy, Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service – Baltimore Field Office; and Chief James W. Johnson of the Baltimore County Police Department.
According to court documents, Aderomilehin deposited counterfeit checks into his co-conspirators’ bank accounts, withdrawing funds before the checks were discovered as fraudulent. He then distributed the proceeds to another defendant and received a cut for himself. Aderomilehin also participated in a credit card skimming scheme, driving others around while using counterfeit credit cards purchased with stolen numbers. Eventually, he began creating his own counterfeit cards after recruiting restaurant employees to skim credit cards.
During the course of these conspiracies, Aderomilehin and his associates targeted over 250 victims, attempting or obtaining between $400,000 and $1 million in fraudulent transactions.
Eight defendants have pleaded guilty thus far, with sentences ranging up to 56 months. The Maryland Identity Theft Working Group has been instrumental in this case, demonstrating the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat identity theft. This case is also part of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force’s ongoing efforts to investigate and prosecute financial crimes.
