A Randolph County man is facing up to 20 years behind bars after admitting to his role in a massive methamphetamine conspiracy.
Donald Ray Cantrell, Jr., 48, of Mill Creek, West Virginia, entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in federal court. The arrest comes just months after Cantrell was released from supervised probation following a previous stint for a related drug charge.
Court documents reveal that U.S. Probation officers initiated a search of Cantrell’s home during a visit, uncovering a staggering 220 grams of methamphetamine. The discovery led to Cantrell’s immediate arrest and indictment on federal charges.
Cantrell’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to the Mountain Region Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative that led the investigation into Cantrell’s operation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as the West Virginia State Police, also played key roles in unraveling the conspiracy.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner is tasked with prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the proceedings, which will ultimately determine Cantrell’s fate.
Cantrell’s guilty plea sets the stage for a potentially lengthy prison sentence. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he faces up to 20 years behind bars for his role in the methamphetamine conspiracy. A formal sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date to determine Cantrell’s exact punishment.
