BUFFALO, N.Y. – John Stuart, 37, of Ransomville, NY, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 36 months for the sickening crime of possessing child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor. U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo didn’t stop there, tacking on a 25-year term of supervised release and mandatory registration as a sex offender. The sentence, announced today by U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo, barely begins to address the depravity of Stuart’s actions.
The case began in August 2019 when the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force picked up a digital scent. A lead indicated someone accessing deeply disturbing content on the Tor network in May 2019. Investigators traced the user’s IP address directly to Stuart’s Ransomville address. It wasn’t just a fleeting visit; the investigation revealed a full-blown obsession.
In October 2020, federal agents raided Stuart’s home, seizing a digital hoard of depravity. Two laptops, a cell phone, a hard drive, and a desktop computer tower were all taken into evidence. A forensic examination unleashed the full horror: approximately 8,000 videos and 2,000 images of child pornography resided on one laptop alone. The second laptop contained another 150 images and a video. The cell phone yielded 90 images and 150 videos, and the hard drive held 90 images and two more videos. Disturbingly, some of the images depicted acts of violence against children.
But the filth didn’t end there. During the search, officers also discovered a marijuana grow operation, with live plants and over a pound of dried marijuana ready for distribution. Stuart readily admitted to being a chronic user. Even more concerning, authorities found three firearms on the property. As a user of controlled substances, Stuart was legally prohibited from possessing them, adding a significant weapons violation to his mounting legal troubles.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig R. Gestring, who skillfully prosecuted the case, presented a mountain of evidence that left no room for denial. The sentencing sends a clear message: those who prey on children and hide in the shadows of the internet will be found and brought to justice. Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia of the FBI and Cheektowaga Police Chief Brian Coons deserve credit for their teams’ relentless work on this case.
Stuart’s 25 years of supervised release will be a constant reminder of his crimes. However, the damage is done, and the victims deserve far more than a sentence can deliver. This case serves as a chilling reminder of the darkness that lurks online and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children. # # #
