RAPID CITY – The grimy streets of Rapid City, South Dakota, have been rid of one of its most notorious drug kingpins. Brian Jackson, 64, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison for his role in the illegal drug trade.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that on January 27, 2023, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken imposed a severe penalty on Jackson. In addition to the lengthy sentence, Jackson faces five years of supervised release and is ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Jackson was indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance by a federal grand jury in January 2020. He pleaded guilty on September 23, 2022, after being caught red-handed transporting methamphetamine between California and South Dakota multiple times.
On one such trip back from California, Jackson was stopped by South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers. They discovered approximately two pounds of methamphetamine in his possession. The investigation revealed that Jackson’s intent was to distribute the drug in Western South Dakota.
This case was a collaborative effort by the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team (UNET), a local drug task force consisting of law enforcement from various agencies, including the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota National Guard. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gina S. Nelson was instrumental in prosecuting this case.
Upon his conviction, Jackson was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, ensuring that he would no longer pose a threat on the streets of Rapid City or anywhere else.
