Rapid City Man Convicted on Assault Charges

A Rapid City man, Richard Harris Bear Runner, 24, has been found guilty of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a federal jury decided on May 8, 2013. The case stemmed from an incident in September 2012 when Bear Runner allegedly assaulted a woman with a wooden stick that had a sharp hook on it, causing multiple cuts on her legs and back.

According to the indictment, Bear Runner was indicted in November 2012 after an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the verdict and commended the work of the investigators and prosecutors who brought the case to trial. ‘The charges relate to an incident where a woman was severely injured by Richard Bear Runner,’ Johnson said. ‘We will continue to hold accountable those who commit violent crimes in our community.’

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah B. Collins and Wayne A. Venhuizen. A sentencing date has not been set.

Richard Bear Runner’s conviction is a reminder that our community will not tolerate violent crimes. The Rapid City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to ensure that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.

As the case moves forward, the community can expect to see a more detailed account of the events leading up to the assault and the subsequent investigation.

The conviction of Richard Bear Runner serves as a warning to those who would commit similar crimes: the consequences of such actions will be severe and long-lasting.
