Rapids Man Sentenced For Hiring Alien Workers
Brendan V. Johnson, United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota, announced that a Rapid City man has been sentenced for violating immigration laws.
Benedict Munoz-Botello, 49, owner of El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant, was found guilty of Continuing Unlawful Employment of Aliens.
Between January 2008 and February 2010, Munoz-Botello knowingly employed illegal aliens to work at the restaurant. He has been ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and a $10 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and other federal and state law enforcement agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins led the prosecution of the case.
A U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on August 15, 2014.
The case is a reminder that hiring undocumented workers is a serious crime and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
