Former gymnastics coach Raymond Adams, 42, of Boca Raton, Florida, has been charged with attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor and possession of child pornography, according to a recent indictment.
The indictment, handed down in the Southern District of Florida, charges Adams with seven counts, including attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor, possession of child pornography, and attempted receipt of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1470, 2252(a)(2) and 2252(a)(4)(B).
Adams, who is also facing pending state charges in Broward County 17th Judicial Circuit in case number 09019123CF10A related to molesting a 10-year-old gymnastics student of his in 2009, had his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge William Matthewman on March 15, 2013.
A pre-trial detention hearing is set for Monday, March 18, 2013, before the duty United States Magistrate Judge. If convicted, Adams faces a mandatory statutory minimum sentence of five years and a possible maximum statutory sentence of up to twenty years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release. In addition, Adams would have to register as a sex offender.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood was launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice and is led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS).
