PEORIA, Ill. – Darell Reed, 35, has been handed an additional 15 months’ imprisonment for his brazen act of bringing contraband into the Federal Correctional Institution in Pekin, Illinois (FCI-Pekin). The sentence was imposed on August 5, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Jonathan E. Hawley.
Reed’s latest conviction stems from an incident on March 10, 2024, where he managed to transfer a prohibited object into the facility during a visitor’s visit. Officials ultimately discovered two small orange balloons filled with 30 strips of film containing Suboxone and buprenorphine, Schedule III controlled substances.
Under federal law, Reed could have been sentenced to no more than five years imprisonment for his offense, to be served consecutive to his existing sentence. Alongside the prison term, he must also pay a $100 special assessment and face up to three years of supervised release upon his release from custody.
The investigation into Reed’s actions was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Springfield Field Office, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa P. Ortiz led the prosecution for the government.
Reed’s original sentence included charges of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance, which he is already serving at FCI-Pekin.
This latest development in the grim saga of prison corruption underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to crack down on drug trafficking within correctional facilities.
