ORLANDO, FL – Reginald Dugger, 42, of Orlando, is facing a potential 45-year federal prison sentence after being indicted on charges of attempted possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The indictment, returned this week, paints a picture of a repeat offender allegedly continuing a life of crime despite a lengthy rap sheet.
According to federal prosecutors, on February 29th, Dugger attempted to distribute N,N-Dimethylpentylone, a Schedule I controlled substance. Simultaneously, authorities allege he was in possession of a Rock Island Armory revolver and a Palmetto State Armory rifle – a clear violation of federal law given his five prior felony convictions. As a convicted felon, Dugger is legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg’s office announced the indictment, signaling the government’s intent to pursue maximum penalties. If convicted on both counts, Dugger could face up to 30 years for the drug offense and an additional 15 years for the firearm charge. The U.S. Attorney’s office also intends to seize the firearms and ammunition connected to the alleged crimes.
The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), underscores a coordinated effort to target repeat offenders and disrupt the flow of illegal drugs and firearms in Central Florida. Assistant U.S. Attorney Noah P. Dorman is prosecuting the case.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. The program, reinvigorated in 2021, emphasizes building trust, supporting community organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts on the most pressing threats.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Dugger is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, his history and the nature of these charges suggest a dangerous individual who allegedly disregarded the law, putting the public at risk. The Tampa Field Division will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system.
