Local Man Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for Fentanyl Trafficking

Rene Arnold Ruiz, a 52-year-old resident of Kent County, has been sentenced to 192 months, or 16 years, in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine.

According to court documents, Ruiz was arrested in May 2024 after a search of his storage unit in Kent County uncovered 8,558 counterfeit pills, which were designed to look like Oxycodone 30mg pills but in fact cumulatively contained over 900 grams of fentanyl, along with over 400 grams of heroin.

“This case demonstrates the serious threat posed by the trafficking of illegal drugs, especially fentanyl and methamphetamine, here in west Michigan and across the United States,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew B. Birge.

Ruiz previously pleaded guilty on January 13, 2025. The sentencing was held on Monday, and Ruiz was sentenced to the maximum 16 years in prison.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan.

Ruiz’s sentencing is a significant blow to the fentanyl trafficking ring and serves as a reminder of the dangers of these illicit substances.
