Balwinder Singh, Conspiracy to Support Terrorists, Nevada 2023

RENO, Nev. — In a chilling testament to the nation’s resolve against terror, Balwinder Singh, 41, was today locked away for 180 months for conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists aiming to carve out an independent Sikh state in India’s Punjab region.

The sentence, announced by Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary B. McCord and U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden for Nevada, underscores the collaborative efforts of federal law enforcement agencies. “The JTTF investigation led to uncovering a Reno terror cell member who aimed to intimidate the Indian government,” said Bogden.

“This sentence is a stark reminder that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force tirelessly combats any attempts to support organizations bred for murder,” echoed Special Agent in Charge Aaron C. Rouse of the FBI’s Las Vegas Division.

Singh, also known as Jhaji, Happy, Possi, and Baljit Singh, is an Indian citizen with permanent U.S. residency. He pleaded guilty on November 29, 2016, for conspiring between September 2013 and December 2013 to support attacks in India.

Details revealed that Singh conspired with others to facilitate travel, funding, and materials for a terror attack. In October 2013, they planned for a co-conspirator to execute an assassination or maiming of an Indian governmental official after arriving in South Asia. On December 9, 2013, law enforcement thwarted the conspirator’s attempt to board a flight with stolen night vision goggles, averting catastrophe.

The FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes ICE-HSI, NCIS, and Nevada DOI, among others, investigated the case. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sue Fahami, Brian L. Sullivan, Carla Higginbotham, and Trial Attorney Mara M. Kohn.
