ALBANY, NY – Angel Madera, 30, of Rensselaer, New York, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after being indicted on charges of conspiring to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance. Madera was ordered detained last week pending trial, signaling the feds intend to make an example of him.
The indictment alleges Madera worked with co-conspirator Daval Byrams to funnel cocaine from New York City into the Capital District for street-level distribution. The bust came March 11, 2025, when three bricks of cocaine – each weighing one kilogram – were recovered from Byrams as he and Madera exited a bus in Schenectady. Byrams already threw in the towel, pleading guilty earlier this month to possessing the three kilograms of cocaine with the intent to distribute it. He’s set to be sentenced September 16, 2025, leaving Madera to face the music alone.
United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III didn’t mince words: “The defendant is charged with bringing significant quantities of dangerous drugs from New York City to be distributed in the Capital District. Narcotics have been ravaging our society and here in the Northern District of New York, if you are arrested for distributing narcotics or possessing them with the intent to distribute, regardless of the quantity, you will face the highest possible punishment the law provides.” This isn’t a slap on the wrist case; Sarcone is promising a full-force prosecution.
If convicted, Madera is looking at a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison, but the potential sentence could reach a staggering 40 years behind bars. Add to that a potential fine of up to $5,000,000 and a term of supervised release lasting at least 4 years, and potentially for life. The feds aren’t playing around when it comes to moving weight like this.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli emphasized the agency’s commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking. “As alleged, Mr. Madera trafficked dangerous drugs into the Capital Region with the intention of selling them in our communities. The FBI will continue to do everything we can to stop the sale of illicit narcotics in our streets and keep our communities safe.” The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, a clear indication of the priority placed on dismantling these networks.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Reiner is leading the prosecution. It’s crucial to remember that the charges are currently just accusations, and Madera is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But with three kilos of cocaine and a co-conspirator already singing, the odds are stacked against him. This case serves as a stark warning: move drugs in the Northern District of New York, and you’ll face the full weight of the federal justice system.
