Las Vegas, NV – Russell Hamblin, 63, is headed back to prison after being sentenced to 10 years for possessing child sexual abuse material. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Richard F. Boulware II, is the latest chapter in a disturbing pattern for Hamblin, a convicted sex offender already subject to a lifetime of supervised release.
The bust went down in April 2022 when U.S. Probation Officers conducted a routine home visit. What they found wasn’t routine. Scattered on the floor were printed images depicting young, nude females. A deeper search uncovered multiple flash drives and cell phones, all seized as evidence. Hamblin quickly confessed to possessing between 10 and 150 items of child pornography on those devices – a digital warehouse of exploitation.
This isn’t Hamblin’s first rodeo. Back in 2008, he was convicted of receiving child pornography in federal court right here in Las Vegas. He served time, but the lifetime supervised release clearly wasn’t enough to keep him from re-offending. The feds are sending a clear message: repeat offenders will face the maximum penalties, and a lifetime on paper isn’t a shield.
Federal prosecutors, led by United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada and with key investigative work from FBI Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans, built a solid case. Hamblin pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in November 2022, removing any doubt about his culpability. He’ll now spend the next decade behind bars, followed by 15 years of supervised release – a longer stretch this time around.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 aimed at dismantling child sexual exploitation networks. The program pools resources from federal, state, and local agencies to identify predators, rescue victims, and bring abusers to justice. It’s a grim reminder that the fight against child exploitation is a constant, uphill battle.
This case isn’t just about one man and his depraved obsession. It’s a stark illustration of the vulnerability of children in the digital age and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to protect them.
