ALBANY, NEW YORK – David Degrasse, a 59-year-old man from West Warwick, Rhode Island, has admitted to a massive ATM theft spree across multiple states. In a gritty plea deal announced by Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and law enforcement partners, Degrasse confessed to sawing into ATMs and removing over $55,000 in cash.
The spree began on April 27, 2023, with Degrasse targeting an ATM in Catskill, New York. He made off with approximately $9,300 from that machine before moving to other states, including Walden, Pine Plains, Lenox, Concord, and Bagdad, where he continued his thefts.
In addition to the ATM thefts, Degrasse acknowledged cutting alarm wires at a convenience store in Hillsdale, New York, but abandoned his efforts there. His crime spree came to an end when he was apprehended by law enforcement.
Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III commented, ‘David Degrasse’s multi-state crime spree is over. His arrest and prosecution should put an end to his despicable targeting and burglarizing of small businesses.’ Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli of the FBI emphasized that their partnership with local law enforcement will continue to target criminals who prey on small businesses for personal gain.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James highlighted the collaborative efforts of Troopers, Investigators, and federal partners, praising their work in bringing this case to a successful resolution.
Degrasse faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and supervised release for three years. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Reiner is prosecuting the case.
