PROVIDENCE, RI – Manuel Jose Miranda, 36, of Warwick, Rhode Island, is facing significant federal prison time after admitting today to trafficking two kilograms of cocaine. The conviction, announced by Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom, caps a months-long investigation that snared Miranda in a meticulously planned sting operation.
According to court documents, the scheme unraveled in September 2024 when U.S. Postal Inspectors flagged a suspicious package destined for Miranda’s residence. Inside, they found two kilos of high-grade cocaine. Rather than immediately intercepting the shipment, investigators opted for a controlled delivery. The package was resealed and delivered to Miranda’s address, all while under the watchful eyes of law enforcement.
Undercover Postal Inspectors maintained surveillance as Miranda retrieved the parcel from outside his front door. As authorities moved to execute a search and arrest, Miranda attempted to flee the scene on a motorcycle. He was quickly apprehended, ordered to stop, and dismount. A search of a backpack carried by Miranda revealed the two kilograms of cocaine – the very package he’d just collected.
Miranda pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. This isn’t a plea bargain for a slap on the wrist; the charge carries a hefty mandatory minimum sentence. The specifics will be determined at sentencing, but Miranda is looking at years behind bars.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 4, 2025, before a federal district judge. The judge will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, the severity of the crime, and other statutory factors when imposing a sentence. Don’t expect leniency – federal judges are increasingly tough on drug traffickers.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the United States Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigation, and the Warwick Police Department. This case serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement is actively monitoring postal traffic and will pursue those who attempt to use the mail to facilitate illegal drug distribution.
