Richard Quintana, a 24-year-old from Dolliver, Iowa, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm. Quintana’s sentence was handed down on September 24, 2024, by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.
Quintana’s troubles began in 2021 when he started purchasing firearms on five separate occasions. Despite being a drug user, Quintana lied on his firearm purchasing forms, claiming he was not a drug user. As a result, he was prohibited from purchasing and possessing firearms. Three of the firearms Quintana purchased were later recovered by law enforcement as part of crimes committed by other individuals.
The situation escalated in December 2023 when law enforcement observed Quintana driving a vehicle in Fort Dodge, Iowa. When law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, Quintana led them on a high-speed pursuit through residential areas before he was finally apprehended.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. PSN brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust and legitimacy in the community, prevent violence, and set strategic enforcement priorities.
Quintana was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Fort Dodge Police Department.
Quintana’s sentence includes 18 months in federal prison and a two-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system, and Quintana is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of lying on firearm purchasing forms and the importance of community-based initiatives in preventing gun violence.
