Richmond Man Sentenced for Marijuana and Ethylone Trafficking

A 37-year-old Richmond man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute marijuana and ethylone, a synthetic cathinone. Michael Newman faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on February 25, 2021, in the Eastern District of Virginia.

According to court documents, Newman was located at a closed gas station in James City County on May 10, 2015, and found to be in possession of marijuana, ethylone, drug scales, and more than $3,000 in cash. The marijuana and ethylone were both intended for distribution.

Newman was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 10, 2015, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric M. Hurt. The case is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington, the U.S. Postal Inspection Services’ Washington Division, and the James City County Police.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana J. Boente, Special Agent in Charge of ICE’s HSI Washington Clark E. Settles, Acting Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Services’ Washington Division David G. Bowers, and Chief of James City County Police Bradley Rinehimer made the announcement after the plea was accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas E. Miller.

The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
