A 47-year-old Harlingen man has been locked up behind bars for possessing child pornography, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Rico Deangelo Longoria pleaded guilty to the charges on April 1, and U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. sentenced him to 121 months in federal prison. He was also ordered to serve 15 years of supervised release following the completion of his prison term.
Longoria will have to comply with numerous requirements designed to restrict his access to children and the internet during his supervised release. He will also be ordered to register as a sex offender and pay $60,500 in restitution to the victims of the offense.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the offense, reading excerpts from victim impact statements that highlighted enduring trauma and lifelong consequences inflicted on the victims. The statements documented abuse in the material found in Longoria’s possession, which included 337 images and 47 videos of child sexual abuse material.
The FBI conducted the investigation, which was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Longoria will continue in custody following the sentencing, pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana C. Cano prosecuted the case.
