Curley Nakai Jr., a 25-year-old Arizona man and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, assaulted a woman with a rifle in a New Mexico parking lot on August 24, 2024. The incident occurred after the woman, Jane Doe 2, tried to intervene in a suspected domestic violence incident involving Nakai and another woman, Jane Doe 1, at a Basha’s grocery store parking lot. Nakai pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Nakai’s sentence is 76 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations.
The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing, with First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office Justin A. Garris making the announcement. Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall prosecuted the case.
