LOS ANGELES – The grim tale of the Palisades Fire takes a darker turn as former Pacific Palisades resident Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for setting off one of Los Angeles’ most destructive wildfires.
Rinderknecht, also known as ‘Jonathan Rinder’ and ‘Jon Rinder,’ faces three counts: destruction of property by fire, arson affecting interstate commerce, and timber set afire. His next appearance is set to be his arraignment in United States District Court, Los Angeles.
The Palisades Fire began as a ‘holdover’ from the Lachman Fire on New Year’s Day 2025, smoldering underground before roaring above ground. Law enforcement traced it back to Rinderknecht, who was found agitated after driving passengers in Pacific Palisades hours before.
Video evidence and cellphone data place Rinderknecht near the fire as it spread, and he was later caught lying about his location during an interview with authorities. A conviction could land him a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison.
Rinderknecht, once a familiar face in the neighborhood, now faces a life-altering sentence for what may be one of LA’s most infamous wildfires.
Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but Rinderknecht’s actions have turned a tragic event into a costly legal battle.
