PHILADELPHIA – In a brazen display of resistance to authority, Brazilian national Enmanuel Fernandes-Calixto has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for forcibly assaulting a federal officer during an attempted escape from ICE custody. The 21-year-old, also known as Emanuel Fernandes and Emanuel Bartholomew, faces additional supervised release for his actions.
The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, when Fernandes-Calixto was arrested for immigration violations by an ICE ERO officer. During transport, the defendant engaged in a fierce struggle, managing to break free from his handcuffs and flee. He hid in a Northeast Philadelphia residence, but was tracked down and apprehended that evening with the help of the Philadelphia Police Department’s SWAT team.
United States Attorney David Metcalf emphasized the severity of Fernandes-Calixto’s actions. ‘This defendant’s behavior is an affront to the rule of law,’ said Metcalf. ‘Our communities deserve protection from such violent individuals, and Operation Take Back America will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that they receive it.’
This case is a part of Operation Take Back America, a multi-agency initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguarding local communities. The Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) are pivotal in this nationwide effort.
ICE ERO conducted the investigation that led to Fernandes-Calixto’s conviction. The press release was delayed due to the federal government shutdown from October 1, 2025, to November 12, 2025, but the justice served is a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against illegal immigration and violent crime in our communities.
Fernandes-Calixto’s sentence underscores the consequences faced by those who challenge law enforcement officials and defy the legal system. The streets of America are not safe for individuals who threaten its citizens and its laws, and this sentencing is a testament to the justice served on behalf of all Americans.’
