A Ritchie County woman was convicted of health care fraud after repeatedly submitting claims for services she never performed.

Sherri J. Slaven, 50, of Ellenboro, West Virginia, was convicted of the crime in federal court, United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced.

Slaven operated a home health care business and engaged in the scheme to defraud the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commission Workers’ Compensation Old Fund.

She received fraudulent compensation in excess of $100,000 for services that were not provided.

Slaven faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

‘Health care fraud wastes taxpayer money and drives up health care costs,’ said Ihlenfeld.

‘The U.S. Attorney’s Office is taking a more data-driven approach to investigating and prosecuting this type of crime by obtaining and analyzing billing data in real-time.

This allows us to speed up our investigations and stop these schemes sooner, thereby protecting the programs that help the sick and the injured.’

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Montoro prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

The West Virginia Office of the Insurance Commission Office of Inspector General – Fraud Investigations Unit led the inquiry.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John S. Kaull presided over the case.

A conviction for health care fraud is a serious offense, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to pursue those who engage in these schemes.

The public can report suspected cases of health care fraud to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
