Gustavo Rivera-Morales, Methamphetamine Importation, Texas 2023

McALLEN, TEXAS – Gustavo Rivera-Morales, a citizen of Mexico residing in Pasadena, Texas, is headed to federal prison after admitting to a brazen attempt to flood the United States with a hefty supply of narcotics. Rivera-Morales received a 72-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Randy Crane, a punishment handed down for importing methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin from Mexico.

The case unfolded November 30, 2015, when Rivera-Morales drove a vehicle across the border at the Pharr port of entry, fully aware it was laden with illegal substances. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers weren’t fooled. A thorough inspection revealed the drugs expertly concealed within the rear panels on both the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle. It wasn’t a small stash.

Agents uncovered approximately 18 kilograms of methamphetamine, four kilograms of cocaine, and three kilograms of heroin – a combined weight that screams organized criminal activity. The sheer volume indicates Rivera-Morales wasn’t operating alone, though authorities have yet to detail any co-conspirators. The street value of this haul is substantial, likely reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rivera-Morales pleaded guilty on January 28, 2016, effectively ending any pretense of innocence. He has been held without bond since his arrest in November 2015, and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The location of that facility has not yet been disclosed.

This bust was a joint effort by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and CBP. Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda Requénez skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. While 72 months is a significant term, it barely scratches the surface of the damage these drugs could have inflicted on communities.

Following his release from prison, Rivera-Morales will almost certainly face deportation proceedings, returning him to Mexico. But that won’t solve the underlying problem: the relentless flow of narcotics across our southern border. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the dedication of federal agencies working to stem the tide.
