Gang Member Sentenced to 17 Years for Cocaine and Gun Charges

A 20-year-old Rochester gang member, Jacob Rivera, also known as ‘JJ,’ has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in a violent street-level drug trafficking organization, the M.D.B. or ‘The Broezel Boys.’

According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., Rivera was convicted of conspiracy to distribute more than 280 grams of cocaine base and possession of a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci.

The M.D.B. organization was responsible for operating an open-air drug market in a multi-block area of Rochester, near the intersection of Dewey and Lexington Avenues. Members and associates of the group maintained several drug houses in the city, including a duplex residence at 325/327 Lexington Avenue, an upstairs apartment at 171 Maryland Street, and others.

Rivera was not only involved in distributing cocaine, but also used violence and threats of violence against unaffiliated individuals who attempted to sell controlled substances within the group’s territory, as well as against certain witnesses who were deemed hostile to the group’s interests.

The investigation into the M.D.B. organization was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Rochester Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas E. Gregory praised the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, stating that the defendant’s actions were a threat to public safety and that the sentence handed down was a just outcome for the community. Rivera’s 17-year sentence is a significant blow to the M.D.B. organization and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement to keeping Rochester’s streets safe.
