John Mark Bryant, Methamphetamine Sales with Firearm, Virginia 2024

John Mark Bryant, a 21-year-old from Roanoke, Virginia, is headed to federal prison after selling methamphetamine and arming himself with a shotgun despite a prior felony conviction. The sentence, handed down today in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, marks the end of a drug-and-gun operation run from a dingy motel room in Salem.

Bryant pled guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine and one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. He was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison, a penalty that reflects the seriousness of dealing drugs while armed—especially for someone legally barred from owning a weapon.

According to evidence presented by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Bassford, in June 2016, Bryant was living at the Stay-In Motel in Salem. That month, detectives with the Roanoke HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) unit identified him as a dealer moving both meth and firearms. Acting on intelligence, they orchestrated a controlled buy using a confidential informant.

On June 16, 2016, the informant purchased methamphetamine and a shotgun directly from Bryant at the motel. The transaction, captured through surveillance and corroborated by the informant, sealed the case. No money exchanged hands during the buy, but the evidence was enough for a federal indictment.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Roanoke HIDTA, agencies that routinely target violent drug offenders in central and western Virginia. Federal prosecutors emphasized that Bryant’s possession of a firearm as a felon posed a direct threat to public safety.

Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Bassford prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Acting U.S. Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle confirmed the sentencing, underscoring the federal commitment to dismantling drug distribution networks and removing illegal weapons from the streets of Virginia.
