Omaha Man Sentenced to 33 Months for Assaulting an Airman with a Deadly Weapon

On November 30, 2023, a dramatic scene unfolded at the USSTRATCOM gate at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Robert A. Williams, 29, of Omaha, drove a blue Honda CR-V onto the installation, narrowly missing two uniformed U.S. Air Force Security Forces Airmen.

According to prosecutors, Williams was suspected of driving under the influence and was stopped by entry controllers at the entry control point (ECP). However, Williams refused to comply, running over a cone and driving onto the installation at a high rate of speed. The controllers activated barriers, forcing Williams to U-turn at least twice before attempting to stop the CR-V while it was headed towards them.

Fortunately, the Airmen were able to move out of the way, avoiding a potentially deadly collision. The controllers, placed in immediate danger, fired rounds into the vehicle. Williams, however, still managed to drive the CR-V back through the ECP and off the installation.

Investigations led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the 55th Wing Security Forces Squadron at Offutt Air Force Base determined that Williams purchased the CR-V from a used car dealer two days prior to the incident. Video evidence and eyewitness accounts confirmed Williams’s identity as the driver of the CR-V.

U.S. Attorney Susan T. Lehr announced that Robert A. Williams was sentenced on August 16, 2024, in federal court in Omaha to 33 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. Following his release from prison, Williams will be required to complete a 3-year term of supervised release.
