Robert Contreras, Fentanyl Trafficking, Virginia 2023

ABINGDON, VA – Robert Contreras, 23, of Buena Park, California, is facing a minimum of 15 years in federal prison after admitting to running a massive fentanyl pipeline into Southwest Virginia. The scale of Contreras’ operation – supplying between 10,000 and 30,000 pressed fentanyl pills per week – paints a grim picture of the opioid crisis gripping the nation, and the lengths traffickers will go to profit from addiction.

The bust, announced Wednesday, is the culmination of a dogged investigation that didn’t stop at the first arrest. After a tragic overdose in Southwest Virginia, federal prosecutors began to unravel a network of dealers, starting with those on the ground and working their way up the supply chain. This wasn’t just about catching street-level pushers; it was about choking off the source. According to U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh, the investigation led to the conviction of Marco Orozco and then his supplier, before finally landing on Contreras.

“Fentanyl, especially in the form of pressed pills, is taking its toll on America, and Virginia is no exception,” Kavanaugh stated. “We will not sit by and allow individuals to profit by distributing this poison into our communities, and we will follow the trail as far as we can.” The trail, in this case, led across state lines to Contreras’ California home, where authorities executed a search warrant on March 6. They found more than just pills.

The raid on Contreras’ residence yielded 1,639 pressed fentanyl pills, a staggering $31,294 in cash, and five firearms – all without serial numbers. Investigators also seized approximately 7,000 alprazolam pills, 3,000 Adderall pills, 242 grams of cocaine, and other hallucinogenic narcotics. The discovery of the untraceable firearms underscores the dangerous intersection of drug trafficking and illegal weapons, a common thread in these cases.

Contreras pled guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The investigation involved a broad coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, the Norton Police Department, the ATF, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and several California police departments. The cooperation between agencies was critical in dismantling this operation.

Contreras is scheduled for sentencing on February 22, 2024. While the mandatory minimum is 15 years, the final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, taking into account sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. This conviction, while significant, is just one battle in the ongoing war against fentanyl. Prosecutors say they will continue to aggressively pursue those responsible for flooding communities with this deadly drug, no matter where they’re hiding.
