LAS VEGAS, NV – Robert Dillon, 46, is headed back to prison after being sentenced to 10 years for his role in a deadly fentanyl trafficking operation. U.S. District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey handed down the sentence yesterday, adding another chapter to Dillon’s extensive criminal record. The conviction comes as overdose deaths continue to shatter records nationwide, fueled by the surge in potent synthetic opioids.
Court documents reveal Dillon conspired with his brother, Melvin Dillon, 49, and others to distribute at least 40 grams of fentanyl – a Schedule II controlled substance. The Dillons weren’t just moving powder; they were dealing in a substance capable of killing with a dose smaller than a pencil tip. In May 2019, Robert Dillon upped the ante, possessing a .380 caliber pistol during one of the drug sales, linking firearms to the already dangerous trade.
Robert Dillon pleaded guilty in July 2022 to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. His brother, Melvin Dillon, a nine-time convicted felon himself, already received a harsher sentence of 128 months (over 10 years) for his part in the scheme. This wasn’t a first-time offense for either man – a fact clearly weighed by Judge Dorsey.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Las Vegas District Office, underscores the increasing collaboration between federal agencies to combat the fentanyl crisis. Acting Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the ATF and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Kevin Adams of the DEA highlighted the severity of the threat posed by these operations.
Fentanyl’s potency is terrifying. Just two milligrams – an amount that can barely be seen – constitutes a potentially lethal dose. The numbers are staggering: in 2021, over 107,000 Americans died from drug poisonings, and a horrifying 66% of those deaths were linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The Dillons’ operation directly contributed to this national tragedy.
U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada announced the sentencing, sending a clear message that those who profit from peddling this deadly drug will face serious consequences. While this sentence removes two players from the game, the fight against fentanyl trafficking is far from over, and Grimy Times will continue to report on the individuals and networks fueling this epidemic.
