Robert E. Durham, a 34-year-old man from Jena, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to possessing unregistered silencers, which he also constructed and sold. According to the guilty plea, Durham was recorded setting up a sale of silencers with an undercover ATF agent on May 10, 2016, in Winnfield, Louisiana.

The undercover agent purchased three silencers from Durham, who was then searched by law enforcement agents at his home on May 19, 2016. During the search, agents found and seized silencers, homemade firearm suppressors, ammunition, tools, and a drill press to make silencers, silencer parts, and packaged ‘solvent trap kits,’ which are also used to make silencers.

The silencers and silencer parts and kits are defined as firearms according to federal law and are required to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. However, the illegal silencers Durham possessed were not registered.

Durham faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $10,000 fine. A sentencing date of October 5, 2016, has been set.

The ATF and the Louisiana State Police conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney James G. Cowles Jr. prosecuting the case.

According to the guilty plea, Durham was in possession of unregistered silencers, which is a serious crime. The severity of the punishment reflects the seriousness of the offense.

Durham’s case serves as a reminder that the laws regulating firearms are in place to protect public safety and that those who choose to break these laws will be held accountable.
