Jonathan Ramos-Vasquez, Illegal Firearm Possession, Louisiana 2015

Jonathan Ramos-Vasquez, a 27-year-old native of Honduras, pleaded guilty to possession of a handgun by a person illegally present in the United States. The crime occurred in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.

According to court documents, on March 21, 2015, deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office were given information that Ramos-Vasquez was located at an address in Lafourche Parish. They were given permission to enter the residence and encountered Ramos-Vasquez in his bedroom.

Deputies spotted an Astra model A70, 9mm semi-automatic handgun next to Ramos-Vasquez on his bed. The handgun had traveled in interstate commerce as it had been manufactured in Spain. Ramos-Vasquez ultimately admitted that he was in the country illegally and that the handgun belonged to him.

Ramos-Vasquez had previously been deported from the United States on October 26, 2011, and had not received permission from the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reenter.

Ramos-Vasquez faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, as well as a fine of $250,000. United States District Court Judge Susie Morgan set sentencing for November 2, 2016.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution.
