Robert J. Gross, 67, of Kansas City, Mo., was convicted today by a federal jury on multiple counts of stalking across state lines and illegally possessing firearms—crimes rooted in a disturbing pattern of harassment targeting women at Kansas massage parlors.
Gross was found guilty of two counts of interstate stalking, three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and three counts of receiving firearms while under indictment. The charges stem from a 2017 investigation triggered by his aggressive and sexually charged confrontations at massage businesses in Olathe and Lawrence, Kan.
On October 1, 2017, Gross visited A+ Health Massage and Alpha Massage in Olathe, where he was turned away for requesting sexual favors. He then went to Tea Spa Massage in Lawrence, paid for a session, stripped completely naked, and refused to leave when told no sexual acts would occur. Surveillance video shows Gross walking the premises naked, threatening the masseuse, and physically grabbing her. The worker fled and flagged down a stranger to help remove him.
The business manager, who oversaw all three parlors, reported seeing Gross driving through her residential neighborhood the same day—escalating fears of targeted surveillance. Law enforcement launched a probe, which quickly revealed Gross’s alarming preparations: on December 2, he bought four sets of handcuffs, “SECURITY” shirts with fake badges, and two balaclavas at a Kansas City, Kan., surplus store. He had purchased additional restraints the week before.
While under indictment in Kansas for aggravated sexual battery and already a convicted felon for cocaine distribution and terroristic threats, Gross attended the Kansas City Gun Show on December 16 and 17. He handled a 9mm “Uzi”-type firearm and inquired about buying up to three guns. The next day, he handled a Smith and Wesson 9mm. Federal law strictly prohibits felons and indicted individuals from possessing or receiving firearms.
On December 22, 2017, Gross returned to the surplus store, bought four more sets of handcuffs, another balaclava, and inquired about a bulletproof vest. Later that day, he removed both license plates from his car, drove to a Pizza Ranch lot, then met a man in a white pickup at a Liberty, Mo., Lowe’s parking lot—where he purchased two shotguns in a clandestine exchange. The deal was caught on surveillance, sealing his fate at trial.
