Defendant Charged with Selling Fake Vitamins
Robert J. Trigo, a 75-year-old Middletown business owner, has been charged with manufacturing and selling adulterated dietary supplements. Trigo owns and operates NatureMost of New England, Inc., a company that produces vitamins and dietary supplements for both domestic and international markets.
According to court documents, Trigo held a meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014 to discuss NatureMost’s violations of good manufacturing practice regulations. At the time, Trigo claimed that his company had ceased production and distribution of all products, and promised to meet with the FDA before resuming operations.
However, it is alleged that Trigo never contacted the FDA about resuming operations, and in 2017, NatureMost and Trigo fraudulently sold adulterated dietary supplements that did not meet good manufacturing practice regulations.
The indictment charges Trigo and NatureMost with three counts of introducing adulterated dietary supplements into interstate commerce. If convicted, Trigo faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count, while NatureMost faces a fine of up to $500,000 on each count.
U.S. Attorney John H. Durham stressed that an indictment is not evidence of guilt, and that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case is being investigated by the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel.
