Robert Okamura, Attempted Enticement of a Minor, New York 2011

Robert Okamura, a registered sex offender, was sentenced to 19 years and 7 months in prison for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, according to a recent court ruling in the Southern District of New York. Okamura, 46, was convicted of the crime in 2013 and was sentenced by United States District Judge Edgardo Ramos.

Okamura’s crime was committed in 2011, when he responded to an online advertisement placed by law enforcement as part of an undercover operation targeting pedophiles. At the time, Okamura was living in a shelter in Valhalla, Westchester County.

Following a series of explicit online chats with an undercover agent posing as a pedophile, Okamura made a plan to meet the agent at a hotel to engage in sexual activities. On December 14, 2011, Okamura went to the hotel to meet the agent and was arrested.

Okamura pleaded guilty to the crime on July 18, 2013, admitting that he communicated with a person he believed was a 15-year-old girl and persuaded her to meet him for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.

At his sentencing hearing, Judge Ramos underscored the seriousness of the offense, stating that Okamura’s actions demonstrated either a lack of respect for authority or an uncontrollable compulsion.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the efforts of the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations for their assistance in the case.

The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcia S. Cohen, who led the prosecution. Okamura’s sentence includes a 10-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment.
