Jesus Velez, Possession of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Trafficking Crime, New York 2014

Rochester, N.Y. — A grim day in Rochester’s legal landscape as Jesus Velez, 21, admitted to carrying a gun while selling drugs, a move that could land him behind bars for two decades.

Velez, charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute Cocaine and Possession of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Trafficking Crime, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for the drug charge alone. The firearm offense, which is often seen as an aggravating factor in such cases, could add another decade to his sentence.

The charges stem from an incident on July 11, 2014, when police observed Velez with cocaine and a loaded firearm in the city of Rochester. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer M. Noto handled the case, bringing it to a successful conclusion.

This plea is the result of a joint investigation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rochester Police Department, directed by Special Agent in Charge Delano A. Reid and Chief Michael Ciminelli, respectively.

Sentencing is set for June 5, 2015, at 9:15 A.M. EST, where Judge Charles J. Siragusa will oversee the proceedings.
