ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Darnell Jerome, 20, of Rochester, is three years into a probationary sentence after being busted for deliberately misleading federal authorities to gain access to the Greater Rochester International Airport. Jerome was found guilty following a jury trial of making a false statement and sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.
The scheme centered around a job application at a restaurant *inside* the secure area of the airport – beyond the watchful eyes of standard TSA screening. Anyone working in those sterile zones, where knives and other potentially dangerous items are commonplace, is required to undergo a rigorous federal background check and obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge. It’s a system designed to keep passengers safe, and Jerome deliberately tried to game it.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Craig R. Gestring and Kyle P. Rossi, Jerome claimed on his March 2016 SIDA application that he had *never* been arrested. A bold-faced lie. Just one month prior, Jerome had been convicted of Robbery in the Second Degree in Monroe County, slapped with five years of probation for the offense. The robbery involved the display of what appeared to be a firearm – a serious crime of violence.
Federal regulations, tightened significantly after the September 11th attacks, explicitly bar individuals with certain felony convictions from receiving airport security clearance. Jerome’s robbery conviction fell squarely into that prohibited category. The SIDA application itself even *listed* those disqualifying conditions, making his deception all the more brazen. He knowingly attempted to bypass the system meant to protect travelers.
The Federal Air Marshal Service, led by Supervisory Air Marshal-in-Charge William Hall, conducted the investigation that ultimately exposed Jerome’s fraud. The three-year probation sentence sends a clear message: attempting to circumvent airport security protocols will not be tolerated. This isn’t about a simple paperwork error; it’s about a deliberate attempt to compromise public safety.
Barbara Burns of the DOJ USAO was the contact for this report. While three years probation may seem lenient to some, federal authorities maintain that the conviction and resulting restrictions on Jerome’s movements serve as a deterrent to others considering similar actions.
