A federal grand jury in New York has indicted 30-year-old Brandon Correa of Rochester for making direct threats to kill President Barack Obama, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy.
According to the indictment, Correa posted online threats to kill the President, the Governor, and the Lieutenant Governor, each punishable by five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig R. Gestring stated that Correa told a Secret Service Agent after posting the threats that the President was ‘evil’ and had to ‘die’.
The defendant was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman and released. Correa is due back in court on August 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marian W. Payson.
The investigation, led by Special Agent in Charge Tracy Gast of the United States Secret Service and Major Stephen Nevins of the New York State Police, Protective Services Unit, is ongoing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Correa’s alleged actions have sparked concern for the safety of public officials, and the case highlights the importance of protecting those in positions of power.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has vowed to continue its efforts in investigating and prosecuting threats against public officials.
