Fentanyl Trafficking and Non-Fatal Overdose Haunt City of Rochester
A 27-year-old man from Rochester, New York, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to possess and distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, leaving a trail of destruction and a non-fatal overdose in his wake. Soroush Hamedi, a resident of Rochester, NY, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and up to 40 years, along with a $5,000,000 fine.
Hamedi was part of a group operating a notorious drug house at 192 Weaver Street in the City of Rochester. The crew sold quantities of fentanyl and cocaine from the house between January 2018 and February 25, 2020. Hamedi admitted to trafficking between 160 and 280 grams of fentanyl during the conspiracy.
On February 25, 2020, law enforcement personnel executed a search warrant at Hamedi’s residence at 19 Dale Street, Rochester, New York. During the search, agents recovered a clear plastic bag containing 10.064 grams of fentanyl in the basement ceiling, after Hamedi attempted to dispose of it down a vent pipe.
As part of his guilty plea, Hamedi admitted to selling a quantity of fentanyl to a 27-year-old female who later suffered a non-fatal overdose. The investigation into Hamedi’s activities was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, in collaboration with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Rochester Police Department.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl trafficking and the devastating consequences it has on communities. Hamedi’s sentencing is scheduled for December 6, 2021, at 3:00 p.m., before Chief Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett A. Harvey is handling the case. For more information, please contact Barbara Burns at (716) 843-5817 or (716) 551-3051.
