ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The gritty underbelly of cybercrime unfurled its nastiest chapter as Dawnn Marie Walters, a 53-year-old resident of Rochester, faced the music for her sinister involvement in a swatting plot that sent local law enforcement into a tailspin.
According to U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo, Walters was sentenced to one year probation, which includes six months of home detention, by U.S. Magistrate Judge Colleen D. Holland. Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, the case’s point man, revealed that the investigation into this malevolent scheme began in August 2023 when local authorities were alerted to a swatting call.
Swatting is a chilling crime where individuals stage a false report of a serious crime to summon law enforcement to a specific location. In Walters’ case, the target was C.F., with an alleged shooting at C.F.’s parents’ address being her undoing. During the investigation, it came to light that Walters had engaged in online conversations discussing the targeting of C.F. and her devices.
Walters went beyond talking; she actively agreed to help a co-conspirator gain access to C.F.’s device. This led to the co-conspirator’s successful breach of C.F.’s personal email account, which was then used to send an email laden with photographs of deceased children and threats to ‘shoot up some schools in New York’.
The emails, sent from C.F.’s actual address, were a calculated attempt to incite fear and law enforcement action against the innocent party. The FBI, under Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm, and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Christopher Bourque, conducted the investigation that ultimately led to Walters’ sentence.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the perils posed by cybercriminals who use technology as a tool for terror and chaos. The sentences handed down send a clear message: such malevolent actions will not be tolerated and those involved will face the full brunt of the law.
