Manhattan U.S. Attorney Announces Conviction of Rikers Island Correction Officer in Connection with Cover-Up of Inmate Assault
Rodiny Calypso, a New York City Correction Officer, was convicted yesterday of filing a false report in connection with the assault of a handcuffed inmate at Rikers Island.
Joon H. Kim, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the conviction, saying, ‘Prisoners at Rikers Island have the same constitutional rights we all enjoy, and corrections officers do not have the right to abuse inmates in their custody and care.’
According to the Complaint, Indictment, and evidence presented at trial, Rodiny Calypso assaulted a pretrial detainee in the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on February 27, 2014. The assault was captured on surveillance video and witnessed by multiple inmates.
Calypso lied about the circumstances of the assault in a ‘Use of Force’ report, attempting to justify his conduct by making false statements.
The jury acquitted Calypso on one count of violating the inmate’s civil rights and one count of obstruction of justice. The case serves as a reminder that corrections officers will be held accountable for their actions, and that the integrity of investigations into uses of force will be fiercely protected.
The conviction is a significant step towards ensuring that justice reaches all corners of Rikers Island, and that the rights of prisoners are protected.
