A federal grand jury in Phoenix, Arizona has indicted Rodolfo Sandoval, a 32-year-old illegal alien, for attempted murder of a federal officer after he shot at Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agents who were attempting to arrest him during a fentanyl sale on February 24.
According to the Department of Justice, the incident occurred when DEA agents attempted to apprehend Sandoval in connection with a fentanyl sale. Sandoval allegedly fired a gun at the agents, putting their lives at risk.
The indictment charges Sandoval with attempted murder of a federal officer, a felony offense that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Sandoval is also charged with possession of a firearm by an illegal alien and reckless endangerment.
The charges stem from an investigation by the DEA’s Phoenix Field Division and the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
Sandoval is currently being held in federal custody without bond pending trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 25 in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.
