A Metairie man has been indicted for his role in a drug trafficking operation, according to a recent indictment unsealed in federal court.
Roosevelt Cockheran, 39, is charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
The indictment alleges that Cockheran was involved in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 846. He is also accused of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c).
The indictment also contains a sentencing enhancement provision which alleges two qualifying prior serious drug felonies.
Cockheran faces a term of imprisonment of not less than 10 years and a maximum term of life, a fine of $8,000,000, and 8 years of supervised release as to Count One. As to Count Two, he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years, a $1,000,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. He also faces a mandatory consecutive term of five years imprisonment up to life imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release as to Count Three.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The case was investigated by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Mark A. Miller is assigned to the prosecution.
The indictment is merely a charge, and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reiterated.
Cockheran is currently a resident of Metairie, Louisiana, and the crimes are alleged to have occurred in Jefferson Parish.
The exact date of the indictment is July 20, 2023.
