Benjamin George Murphy, Abusive Sexual Contact, South Dakota 1999

A 65-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to a serious sex crime. Benjamin George Murphy appeared in court on January 9, 2013, and entered a guilty plea to Abusive Sexual Contact.

According to the investigation, the incident that led to Murphy’s conviction took place between December 1, 1999, and December 15, 1999. During this time, Murphy had sexual contact with a minor.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both. The conviction stems from a thorough investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.

Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher is handling the case, and a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office said that the prosecution has been ongoing for some time. ‘We are committed to protecting the victims and bringing those responsible to justice,’ the spokesperson said.

Murphy will have to report to the custody of the United States Marshal on February 1, 2013. The exact details of his sentence will be revealed in court at a later date.

The U.S. Attorney’s office has not released any further information about the case. However, it is clear that the prosecution takes allegations of sex crimes seriously and will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.

In light of this case, we urge anyone who may have been a victim of a similar crime to come forward and seek help. There are resources available to support victims of sex crimes, and the U.S. Attorney’s office encourages anyone with information to contact them.
