Rutland Man Gets 9 Years For Heroin And Crack Cocaine Distribution
Calvin Alexander, 31, of Rutland, Vermont, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for conspiring to distribute heroin and crack cocaine in the Rutland area. The sentence was handed down by Chief Judge Christina Reiss of the United States District Court on December 18, 2013.
According to court records, Alexander previously pled guilty to the offense and agreed to the nine-year sentence. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont stated that Alexander was involved in a conspiracy to distribute heroin and crack cocaine in the Rutland area.
Alexander’s troubles with the law began earlier in 2013, when he was charged in state court with a home invasion in Rutland. The incident, which occurred just two weeks before federal drug charges were brought against Alexander, allegedly involved four male subjects, including Alexander, storming into a Rutland residence with pepper spray and a firearm and attempting to rob the occupants of drugs and cash. Two of the occupants were injured in the assault.
The United States Attorney’s Office agreed to recommend to the State Attorney’s Office that the state charges be dismissed in consideration of Alexander’s plea to the nine-year federal sentence.
The case was jointly investigated by the Vermont Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Perella represented the United States, while Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth represented the defendant.
Alexander’s sentence is a result of his involvement in the heroin and crack cocaine distribution ring, which put the safety of the Rutland community at risk.
