Florida Firm Hit with $2.4 Million Email Scam, Funds Recovered

ORLANDO – A sophisticated Business Email Compromise (BEC) scheme nearly cost a Florida semiconductor packaging supplier $2.4 million, but a swift response and dogged investigation by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) resulted in the full recovery of the stolen funds. The victim, identified in court documents as Company 1 (“C1”), was targeted in April 2022 when a fraudster successfully hijacked email communication with its regular equipment vendor, Company 2 (“C2”).

The scam unfolded when C1 received a seemingly legitimate email from what appeared to be C2’s official email address. The message falsely claimed a “fiscal year update” prevented direct deposit into C2’s usual account and requested C1 redirect future payments to a different, fraudulent account. C1 complied, wiring $2,462,000 to the account provided by the criminal. It wasn’t long before C1 realized something was wrong. The company quickly alerted its bank, triggering a freeze on the transferred funds.

USSS agents zeroed in on S.T., the sole signatory on the account that received the illicit funds. S.T. claimed complete ignorance of the fraud, stating he’d never done business with either C1 or C2. He revealed he’d agreed to provide his banking information to a group he met at a Bitcoin conference in January 2022, anticipating payment for unspecified services. Communication with the group, according to S.T., was primarily conducted through the WeChat messaging application, and they denied any involvement when he inquired about the large deposit.

The quick action of C1 and its bank proved crucial. Thanks to their swift reporting, law enforcement was able to seize the entire $2,462,000 before it vanished into the digital ether. U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg secured permission from the Department of Justice’s Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Section (MLARS) to return the funds to the victim, highlighting the importance of civil forfeiture in victim compensation. In fiscal year 2023 alone, the Middle District of Florida recovered nearly $44 million in forfeited funds for crime victims, with over $11 billion returned nationally since 2000.

“This is another example of how fraudsters are getting more sophisticated with their schemes to steal money,” stated Caroline O’Brien Buster, Special Agent in Charge of the Orlando Field Office. “With the cooperation of our partners in the business community, we were able to quickly freeze the funds and assist with returning them to the victim.” The USSS vows to continue investigating BEC schemes and other financial crimes plaguing communities nationwide.

While the funds have been recovered, the perpetrators remain at large. U.S. Attorney Handberg emphasized that in many cases like this, criminal forfeiture isn’t possible because identifying the individuals behind the fraud proves elusive. Nevertheless, civil forfeiture remains a powerful tool for bringing some measure of justice to victims of financial crime.
